HUNT WRITE UP BY Mathew Haith

WHAT TO EXPECT

I started my waterfowl career in Arizona, a place many would think waterfowl hunting would be stagnant. That thought is partially true, as the migration kicks in we get waves of birds who are headed to Mexico or are enjoying the sun like those who live in Arizona. Arizona is one of the most unique places to hunt as you aren’t crossing traditional swampy marshes to your honey hole. Long walks through the desert dodging cactus, rattlesnakes or even quick sand are part of the ritual, all the while dying from the heat. You never know what will land in your spread, rocketing teal to out of place wood ducks the adventure and stories are endless in a land where many don’t give it a chance. The limit is 7 and boy will it be diverse, not a place where you’ll shoot corn fed fat mallards but every day is still a treat in the blind. Another nice thing about Arizona is the quality of birds for mounting from December through January.

  • Early, Mid, Late Season.

  • Weather Expected to be very warm and sunny early season. Mild too hot mid-season with 30-40 degree swings. Late season is comprised of crisp mornings in the 40’s to 75 by noon.

  • Traveling to hunting spots will be comprised of mile to half mile walks through the desert then across river beds. For the larger lakes and rivers a Jon boat or a sturdy kayak will work just fine.

  • Targeted Species= Green wing Teal, Blue Winged Teal, Northern Shoveler, Gadwall, Mallard, Ringneck, Wigeon.

  • Secondary Species = Cinnamon Teal, Pintail, Lesser Scaup, Greater Scaup, Common Goldeneye, Canvasback, Canada Goose,

  • Permit only = Sandhill crane

  • Hunting will be primarily out of natural vegetation, small water holes surrounded by cattails or immersed in flooded mesquite trees waist deep. Jump shooting cattle ponds is also very common within the state.
